"Language Connections" by Sarkis S. Saryan $45.00

Brand New copy of LANGUAGE CONNECTIONS, a book comparative and historical linguistics which discusses the kinship of Armenian to sister Indo-European languages such as Latin Greek, English, German. Preface by Prof. John A. C. Greppin and foreword by Academician Gevorg Djahukian. This book discusses covers the relationship and position of Armenian within the Indo-European (Indo-Germanic) sphere of languages, including the history of research studies in the 19th century that eventually determined that Armenian was an independent language and not a branch or dialect of Iranian or Greek. From the Prologue: “This book is intended for the general reader interested in European languages. This book should also interest students of Armenian background in our schools and universities who would like to know more about the language of their parents. The subject matter shows the relation of these languages to each other, and to Armenian, one of the lesser-known members of the Indo-European language family.” Included is information about some of the great names of linguistic research: Antoine Meillet, Heinrich Hubschmann, Hrachia Adjarian; the discovery of the Armenian alphabet, the translation of the Bible and texts into Armenian, information on the various languages of Europe, and numerous tables which show similarities between various words in Sanskrit, Armenian, Latin, Greek, Slavic, German, English, etc. Carefully prepared, reliable work which brings linguistics to the level of the average reader. Author was a survivor of the 1915 Armenian Genocide who was educated in the New York public schools and City College of New York, then at the Armenian Jemaran in Beirut. By SARKIS SARYAN, printed 1982, Sarmen Book Co., Yarmouth, MA. 7 x 10 inch format, 165 pages, attractively cloth bound, dust jacket. Out-of-print and rare (only 1000 copies printed).
